Burning

Hot burning is held to be a way of clearing 'waste', preparing the seedbed and returning nutrients back to the soil.

Oil and Napalm is used to help start the burns. These artificial burns do not act like bushfires.

The high concentration of timber on the ground, especially in log dumps, creates extraordinarily high temperatures over large areas at ground level, quite unlike a bushfire. These temperatures sterilise the soils to great depths and create a puffy soil which virtually dissolves in the next rain, sending the little nutrient remaining into the streams.

The fire frequently escapes from the clearfelled area and burns surrounding forest, reducing its future value. Rainforest areas without adequate buffer zones and fire protection effort will not regenerate after fire. Photo TM p.32 fig.62
